Don’t Spend All Your Money, Save for a Rainy Day
This podcast episode features, Melandee Jones Canady. She is the senior director of the digital and technology project management office for Abt Associates. Her path to becoming an information technology executive started in her youth with her father. She has been surrounded by technology most of her life and loves her work and the impact it makes within organizations.
Early in her career, she realized that she didn’t fit in. Now, she views these differences as an opportunity to stand out. She has become comfortable with who she is and her value. Thus, resulting in her taking chances. It has paid off, not only for her career; but also, within the organizations she works for and supports.
Her money philosophy, that she learned from losing a job earlier in her career, is to save for a rainy day, don’t spend all your income. She emphasizes prioritizing needs verses wants. Witnessing her parents deal with a major health condition that removed her mom from the workforce, showed her the importance of disability insurance and how it was used to supplement their family’s household income. All of these life events set the tone for her current savings and investing habits. This solid financial foundation allows her to create a strong legacy for her and her family.
